Delhi Sightseeing

Today we had a full day of sightseeing in Delhi. Our hotel arranged for a driver to take us around Delhi, his name is Chabilal and he’s from Nepal. We were in very good hands with him, he made sure we knew where to get a ticket, what to see when we went in and when we would come out of a site he would be there waving. It’s Mohandas Ghandi’s birthday today so there was little traffic and we maneuvered around Delhi quite easily. There are so many sites just driving down the main roads, aside from the rick-shaws, cabs, cars and motorcycles (sometimes carrying a family of 4 or 5!!!!) you’ll see cows in between cars, elephants carrying brush, etc. It really is a site to see in itself.
We first went to Lakshmi Narayan Temple which was so beautiful. We then went to the Sansad Bhavan (Parliament House) where Chabilal insisted we get in the perfect spot for the picture (the middle of the street!), then to India Gate which is a 42m high memorial arch bearing the names of 90,000 Indian army soldiers who died during WWI. Qutab Minar Complex was a beautiful spot with a soaring tower started in 1193, immediately after the defeat of the last Hindu kingdom in Delhi. The ruins around it were amazing to walk around. We headed to Humayun’s Tomb with Chabilal pointing out various sites along the way and then to the Red Fort for sunset. We even saw a snake charmer outside (video included!). All in all a great day of sightseeing around Delhi!
